High, Hepatitis C Cases Due to Injection Drug

Recent data Ministry of Health (MOH) show cases of hepatitis C in Indonesia found most frequently among injection drug users.

Evaluation Based on the results of Hepatitis C Data Collection Phase I is done MOH revealed that nearly 40 percent of patients with hepatitis C who recorded admitted using drug needles. Whereas cases caused by unsafe sexual behavior, tattoos, blood transfusions, transmission from a positive family and other relatively smaller percentage.

Director General of Disease Control and Environmental Health (DG & PL) Ministry of Health, DR. Dr. Tjandra Yoga Aditama, stated that due to high cases of syringe use has become an important record that should be followed up.

Of a total of 5870 cases of hepatitis in Indonesia based on the results of the first phase of data collection conducted in October 2007 to 9 September 2008, 40 percent of which came from IDUs.

"From the cases reported based on the recognition of patients, 40 percent of cases of hepatitis C from needle users. This is a big problem for the transmission of disease, not just HIV-AIDS but also hepatitis" Tjanda said on the sidelines of launch of Illness Data Collection Program Phase II Hepatitis C in Jakarta, Thursday (11/10).

In the first phase, the data collection program for hepatitis C has been implemented in 11 provinces with the reporting unit 49 consists of 13 hospitals, 24 laboratories and 12 units of blood transfusion. Banten province is, North Sumatra, South Sumatra, West Java, Central Java, East Java, Sulses, North Sulawesi, Bali, West Kalimantan and Papua. At this stage, the level of participation units involved to reach 96 percent exceeded the specified targets.

Data collection program that hepatitis C is a collaboration between the Directorate General of Disease Control and Environmental Health (DG P2PL) and PT Roche Indonesia. Phase II program will take place from October 1 until March 31 in 10 provinces with 135 units scattered reporter.
